Do you remember life online? Before the add to cart buttons, before newsletter sign ups, before subscription purchases, the web was a space to hang out. It was the promise at the end of decades of research and development: our digital utopia, the public sphere. The internet has made itself over countless times, but life online today begs one question—why is every website just a place for transactions?
As superfans of the web, we're interested in designing digital spaces that make you want to explore, that spark creativity, that bring out your imagination.
The case for spaces to hang out online
Your baser instincts might have you thinking: if more people spend time on my website, they’ll buy more! But you’re skipping a step. We’re really trying to gin up two illusive attributes—affinity and connection.
We’re all fighting for attention, engagement, ACV. But being memorable is so much more valuable. A space for discovery, play, and general interactivity can make your brand sticky. It can also make people go back to your site to solve a tricky easter egg puzzle or play with a soothing digital fidget spinner. All small details that might feel superfluous, but really make a place come to life.
And of course, there’s the recognition. Cool stuff wins awards and makes people tell other people. It makes them send your link as inspiration or drive them to talk about you in public (see: r/InternetIsBeautiful).
What is a website, anyway?
We’re a small group of pretty opinionated people. It’s gotten us far, helped raise billions of dollars, and given us the conviction to say your idea of a website might be wrong. A website is not:
❌ A digital front door or facade
❌ A place to make sales
❌ A place to communicate about your products and services
❌ A thing you made with Claude code to hook up to your Airtable or Hubspot
A website is your digital world, and, more importantly, ~whatever you want it to be~
Yeah, the custom CMS, the workflows, the business logic, the strategy that helps you grow is all in there, but imagine what you could build around it. If you were stepping foot into your own digital world, what would you want it to feel like? Where would you want to be transported? And what would you want people to do in it? And, maybe most importantly, what story would you want it to tell?
Proof it works
It’s all well and good to say cool stuff is cool, but does it “work”? The answer, dear reader, is yes. Digital worlds have already been shown to:
Increase session duration (19 minutes!)
Make people remember them (“I loved playing with the cloud highlighter” – one of the best developers we know)
Make people want to do stuff on your website (“the form is really fun, I promise” – the greatest VC investor of all time)
Make you seem a lot cooler than your competitors (you have to trust us)
An important disclaimer
This comes from a place of love: keyboards down on Loveable. Step away from the flashy Framer templates. Stop your impulse to do it this way because it seems easy. It is, sort of, but let’s just say the genes of AI-developed websites have strong traits. Anyone can spot them a mile off and you will look like everyone else (read: not memorable).
